Elk River, Minnesota Oct 15, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Don't you sometimes feel that the system has been set up against you? Becky A. Cole does. What began as a simple request for a $3,000 refund from her first attorney soon evolved into a grueling, multi-year legal battle that cost her over $150,000 and, more importantly, eroded her faith in Minnesota's justice system.
In her new memoir, an explosive tell-all, Cole lays out a system allegedly corrupted by judicial bias and attorney misconduct.
A Nightmare Built on Retaliation and Zero Evidence
The 'unbelievable journey' detailed in Cole's book began when she followed an OLPR recommendation to file a small claims suit against her first attorney, Brian Scott VanMeveren, to recover her fee, because the probation he was put on for misconduct in how he represented her against her landlord and to others for the work he was hired to do for them, did not include a requirement for restitution.
Cole reveals that Brian retaliated by filing a baseless, "full of shit" lawsuit against her. It started with a claim of how he was "irreparably harmed" for being "forced" to take cash as part of his retainer, included a motion that it was her fault he was on probation, and told the court he can file false claims in court because OLPR hasn't told him it was wrong to do so. None of these actions was cited as a probation violation.
She then hired an attorney, Tim Maher, in hopes of stopping what Brian was doing. Tim allegedly deceived her by going behind her back to craft a nonsensical settlement arrangement that was designed for Brian's benefit and not hers. He then tried to bully and blackmail her into accepting it, despite having no ability to provide credible evidence that she knew or agreed to it. The book highlights OLPR's dismissal of Tim Maher's actions as mere "sloppy representation."
The system failed completely when Judge Patrick Diamond chose to enforce this settlement, even though the court transcript doesn't contain a complete description of what the settlement arrangement was or how it was to be carried out, and held no evidence that Cole knew or authorized it. A complaint to the judicial ethics committee fell on deaf ears, as well.
"I kept asking for evidence to support their claims, but it never appeared because it didn't exist," Cole says. "But the judge ruled anyway. This was more than an unfair ruling it showed how the system protects itself over those it should serve."

Systemic Failure and the Fight for Accountability
Justice Unraveled goes after the system's supervisors, particularly the OLPR, who didnt bat an eye at Tims attempt to blackmail and bully Cole. After all, Cole comments that the book is her revenge. She wrote in the epilogue that she told the judge the best way for her to pay if she lost on a judgment deemed without merit would be to publish this book.
If you have ever hired an attorney to represent you, encountered a difficult legal issue, or felt powerless in the face of a large institution, you must read this memoir. It is a necessary warning that should prompt people to doubt whether the courts are meant to serve them.
